Is Monistat for Dog Ear Infections Safe and Constructive?
Dawid Łabno
Itchy, Swollen Ears in Dogs and No Vet Bachelor
Many people wonder if you can treat your dog'due south ear infection with Monistat, and the reply might just surprise y'all. 1 day, our dog Jessi started vigorously flapping her ears and scratching ane ear in particular. We gently folded dorsum the ear in question and saw a round, red blemish on the underside of her ear. She had merely finished up treatment for ringworm, so I causeless it was a ringworm lesion that had been left untreated. We applied a bit of the ringworm topical to the ruby spot and went to bed.
Jessi Showed Signs of an Ear Infection
The next morning, we practical the ringworm topical once again. That evening, Jessi was scratching her ear and shaking her head. The inside of the ear had go inflamed and chocolate-brown in color; it was also swollen downward into the ear cavity, though the red spot was no longer visible. We wiped her ear using dog-safe ear-cleaning pads, and a bunch of brown, waxy gunk came out.
Jessi Was Uncomfortable
Past this time, it was Friday night, and the vet was closed. I felt terrible for Jessi; her ear was obviously bothering her. She was shaking her head, scratching her ear with her hand, and rubbing her caput on the carpeting in an attempt to get some relief from the itching. She was going to take a long, frustrating weekend, and if the infection got worse, which I assumed it would without handling, she would suffer.
Jessi was just begging me with her eyes to help her. That's when I decided to brand the hard but proactive decision to take matters into my own hand. I successfully used a product fabricated for women with vaginal yeast infections on Jessi's ear infection at dwelling house. The results were promising.

The poor matter kept shaking her caput and scratching her ear. Her infected ear didn't seem to be painful but was bothering her quite a flake.

What to Do When You Tin can't Reach a Vet
Looking on the net for information that would help my poor dog, I saw that ear infections in dogs could be acquired by bacteria or yeast, but most oftentimes yeast. That'southward when I discovered Zymox Otic, which gets rave reviews from dog owners battling ear infections caused by both leaner and yeast. Unfortunately, Zymox Otic is non available in my area, and getting information technology from Amazon.com would accept several days.
That'south when I discovered a forum post past a domestic dog owner who had spent thousands of dollars on trips to the vet and prescription medications, however his dog'due south ears were not staying infection-free for more than than a week or 2 at a time. He resorted to treating his canis familiaris'due south ear infections at home with Monistat (miconazole)—an over-the-counter medicine for women with vaginal yeast infections. He combined Monistat with another OTC ingredient (hydrocortisone), which alleviates inflammation and itching.
I was a scrap hesitant to try a women's vaginal foam in my canis familiaris's ear for the very good reason that only veterinarians should exist diagnosing and treating ear infections and that corticosteroid ingestion in dogs can prove fatal. Similarly, adverse events can issue from owners taking their pet's health into their own easily and treating them with OTC medications.
Yeast Infections in Dogs
How I Resolved My Dog's Ear Infection
I decided to requite Monistat a try. I dashed to my local Walmart, and for less than $vi, purchased generic Monistat 3 cream (Monistat vii is also available). For less than $1, I also purchased a tube of generic hydrocortisone foam (consider pet-safe alternatives). Here's what I did:
- I mixed equal parts Monistat cream and hydrocortisone cream in a modest dish along with a few drops of h2o.
- I heated the alloy in the microwave at nearly 20% ability for xv–20 seconds.
- I drew upward the mixture into a make clean 6 mL syringe.
- I gently squirted the medicine into my dog's ear and massaged the ear.
- I repeated this one time a day for almost five days. I knew that if this infection didn't clear up, it was likely caused by bacteria and non yeast.
How I Used the Monistat-Hydrocortisone Blend
Poor little Jessi didn't like getting this put in her ear one chip. Luckily, she is too very submissive. I sat with her and stroked her head while my daughter, quick every bit a flash, gently introduced the foam blend into Jessi's ear and massaged it. When we were finished, Jessi shook her caput and sent a few drops flight through the air. I wasn't sure this would work.

Be Prophylactic When Treating Your Domestic dog'southward Ear Infection
Jessi'southward Ear Infection Finally Went Away
The next mean solar day, we noticed Jessi was all the same scratching but not nearly every bit much. Her ear really did look a flake better, but by this time, it was pink and very warm—much warmer than the uninfected ear. We followed this routine, again and again, and she didn't like it i chip. Finally, on twenty-four hours three, the redness and heat were gone, and she was barely scratching and shaking her caput at all.
We connected to utilize information technology for a total of five days. The ear cleared up and stopped making the brown, waxy gunk, and Jessi stopped scratching and flapping her ears; she soon became symptom-free. Once nosotros were finished with the Monistat, we used an ear-cleaning solution made for dogs to clean her ears each twenty-four hour period for virtually four or 5 days until nosotros felt comfortable that there was no residual medicine in her ear. Past this fourth dimension, the Zymox Otic solution had arrived from Amazon. I put information technology away and saved information technology for the adjacent ear infection.

Now she's relaxed, happy, and feeling fine.

Paul, I put Monistat in my domestic dog's ear one time a twenty-four hour period for v days. At that point the infection had cleared upwards. Later the infection was gone, because the Monistat did leave some residue inside the ear, I used dog ear wipes and Zymox for 3-4 days in a row to clean the ear out. The Zymox seemed to work better than the premoistened wipes.

I use Vymox every at present and so just every bit a cleaner and it has kept the ear infections from returning. Vymox is an over-the-counter ear medicine but in my area I have to mail service club information technology. I like the Monistat because I tin can get from just about whatsoever store immediately -- no waiting on a vet appointment or for a mail gild medicine to get in. Wipe it out with a cotton fiber ball or soft fabric if you like, but showtime exist certain to first requite it enough of time for the medicine to work. Zymox is smashing for cleaning the ears -- information technology has an enzyme that dissolves gunk too as destroying yeast and fungus.

I just wanted to say that I used this recipe to treat my dog's ear infection and it has been working so well! He has food allergies and is fine near of the time merely he must have eaten something recently so he gets an infection. The only matter that I did differently from this article was that I used a cotton swab to apply the ointment in his ear considering I couldn't find syringes. I've been applying information technology once a day and it's day 4 now. His ear is noticeably less red and inflamed and is not producing the brownish gunky stuff. Thanks for this tip!

I take a pit bull with a chronic ear infection. I've tried everything-alcohol, peroxide, vinegar, Wally's ear oil, olive oil. Zero. Last week I had an aha moment and idea to try the monistat. Information technology is working! This evening I got out literally chunks of brown gunk and she sat through the whole thing equally grateful and patient as could be. I desire to add a few pieces of communication: go on at information technology until it is gone because if you don't the yeast gets a chance to become resistant to the medicine. Also, treats help during the cleaning because they associate the cleaning with a treat and don't dread it and fight you. And very important-make sure you also care for the back anxiety that they scratch their ears with because they can just reinfect the ears. I use the vinegar for that. I don't apply a syringe in her ear either because she would non tolerate it. Instead I rip a cotton ball in half, squirt a generous amount onto each half, and become them (one at a fourth dimension! ;-) ) into the ear canal and massage. Then I take clean cotton balls and rip them in half as well and get out every bit much junk as I can. I'm also giving her probiotics. You can use these as maintenance for dogs with chronic recurrent ear infections. Start out slow with the amount y'all give of probiotics and build up to a regular dose as they can cause loose stools and stomach bug if given too much too quickly. Thank you for your information and helping people help their pets!

When I noticed the same problem occurring with my current dog, I wondered what was causing it. Long story short, when I switched him to raw food, the yeasty ears stopped. When it started back up again, I realized that he can't take a lot of chicken or beef. When I stick to raw duck and vegetables, he's fine. Case en indicate, I forgot and gave him a few chicken treats last night and his ear is itching right now.

RottieMomma on November 07, 2013:
I am pretty sure our infant has a yeast infection in her ear. We have a female Rottie who will exist a year old this month. She had tons of black goop in her ear with a horribly foul odor. She had been scratching at it and shaking her caput constantly.
I purchased some cleansing wipes and ear cleanser in a squirt bottle to help remove some of the icky goop. The next twenty-four hours- it was just as bad as the first time I cleansed it. I've read about using a ratio of vinegar and h2o which we tried tonight. Nosotros cleansed the left side and she did non tolerate it well- she had acted like she was in pain. The right side went a flake meliorate.
I had made the monistat/hydrocortisone foam batter and used a gloved hand to administer it with a sterile gauze. I know you had mentioned to use a syringe- how far down would I utilize information technology? I know canine ear canals are "50" shaped. Instead of dropping it down and not knowing how far to go- I opted to just swab the outer ear and lightly rubbed the area. I was agape that I would employ an excessive corporeality or that I would place it in deeper and crusade her pain or damage her ear...
Practice you have whatsoever communication on how to administrate it with a syringe? I take several that are sterile and marked in ml. How much should I use per ear? How far down should I go? I've searched online for videos simply have been unable to find any.
I did give her some yogurt that has probiotics and strawberries (which she seriously LOVES). I purchased some higher course probiotics to offset her on also. Several blogs have claimed that yogurt with probiotics accept helped to get things back into balance.
I spoke to a pet store "nutritionist" specialist (who didn't have a caste and then how is he a nutritionist?!?) who suggested changing her nutrition to a grain free formulation since many dogs have allergies- especially to grain. And unfortunately- between our large Rotties... We get through a 50 pound bag every calendar month and would non exist able to afford what he suggested. The stuff he recommended was fabricated of bison or in that location was one with venison and of course- they were the only grain gratis variety in his store. A 28 pound purse was $62 plus revenue enhancement. I mentioned that I have a freezer full of venison and would exist interested in making their food. He was attempting to discourage me as he wanted to brand an expensive sale. He said I would need to accept nutrition courses and basically have a degree. I have taken iii semesters of human nutrition courses and am not going to starting time into this blindly- of class I would research information technology further before switching my girls. I know many people who take made homemade food for their animals- information technology seems as if they are thriving and take changed for the better. Many tout the benefits and positive changes in their dogs health. Folks accept said their dogs previously suffered with chronic ear infections which stopped immediately later making the switch. I will research it farther.... It is frustrating that a store clerk offered no communication other than to switch to a pricey food.! Switching food may help in the long term-- but nosotros still need to treat the active infection.
My poor girl is miserable. Nosotros went through several treats tonight and gave her lotsa lovin'.... Our babies are spoiled :-)
If anyone could advise me on how to utilise/insert the Monistat/Hydrocortisone combo- I would exist extremely thankful and so should my baby daughter :-) I am not sure how far down we should insert it, how much to apply or how to drib it in. If anyone could give me some tips/management... It would be super awesome!

Well, I heed this advice and shall top up my medicine cabinet accordingly. As well equally being effective - this will save on vet's fees. My piddling canis familiaris shakes his head a lot - nevertheless, his ear problem is caused by his hairy ears - dead skin gets trapped downwards there. Like the stylist (kiki'southward all brood) said in her comment - keep hair around the ears clipped. That's what the vet too told me - and it does help.

I am an accolade-winning pet stylist of 37yrs, and I have utilize this pick and have mention this my customers for years, but I will say this, when a person gets their pet groomed, a not bad groom job should e'er brand sure the ears are plucked, and cleaned. retrieve, having your pet clean-cut is to help your pets health, when your pet become a very bad ear infection, your off to the vet, with the vets assist your pet can go the help your pet demand, but if you can't get to the vet the Monistat volition help. just I like to use sea breeze skin cleaner, using a baby wipe, with the sea cakewalk, and so apply the Monistat, treat the ear for a few days, and you tin can save your pet a lot of pain, {Non to mention the vet bill} practiced luck !!
